employers don't pay a living wage. Worse when they diminish low wages
even further by not paying what is legally required. If you feel your
rights are being violated or want more information, contact the Living
Wage Coalition (Carl

--- your employer may not expect or require "off the clock" work - you
can assume that anything you do from the time you enter the worksite to
the time you leave must be paid (as well as any work you do at home for
the employer)
--- your employer must pay you 1 1/2 times your regular rate for any
work you do over 40 hours/week
--- your employer must (in most cases) allow you an uninterrupted meal
period of at least 1/2 hour
--- your employer must provide you with a written statement of your
hours worked, gross wages, payroll deductions & net wages with
every payment.

LABOR COMPLAINT: Ithaca Community News recently
received eight emails from people presuming that this editor condones
labor abuses alleged at a locally-owned business, because that business
accepts Ithaca HOURS.

has been operated by the HOUR board for the past three years. Even when
relying on 500 local businesses to advertise in HOUR Town (1991-1999),
I started United
Workers of Ithaca to challenge abuses of service sector
labor. I've mediated occasional labor disputes. This offer was made

GREEN PARTY NYS COMPTROLLER CANDIDATE Howie
Hawkins would control NYS' $100 billion pension fund. He spoke in
Ithaca twice in recent months: "Carl McCall has run his campaigns on
legalized bribery & kickbacks by asking contractors receiving
state funds t make campaign contributions."
---Hawkins pledged that "My campaign contributors would not get
government contracts" with NYS. He favors public campaign financing. He
wants the NYS pension fund to be controlled "by an elected board of
pensioned workers."
---Hawkins intends to include "environmental audits & social
accounting" to measure financial success. He said tax cuts under
Democrats & Republicans have so favored the rich that our state
has "the most unfair distribution of wealth of all states."

Institution property during construction of the Museum of the Earth.
---"Ms. Zaman is concerned that the removal of a small water feature on
the property will have detrimental effects on frog populations on the
site. We would like to make three points: first that the feature was in
the first place artificial (built in 1927); second that it has been
replaced by new artificial water features that are cumulatively more
than 40 times its size & just as attractive as amphibian
habitat; & finally that the only natural wetland on the PRI
property is not only being retained during construction but actually
enhanced by removal of non-native vegetation. The result of these
changes will almost certainly be an increase, not a decrease, of
amphibian population levels on the site. Contrary to what Ms. Zaman
states, the removal of the feature had nothing to do with parking but
rather with a redesign of drainage on the front of the site.

& satisfying lives.

are likeliest to create public policy that makes a safer future. They
are likelier to understand & accept important changes. They are
also less stampeded by trumpets, to wars or to stores.
