EDITORIAL: BUSH MAY STAY
Election results show Bush may Stay rather than Go. Thus gone instead is the illusion that during the next four years the federal government will reduce warmaking, reduce oil dependence, repair the environment, preserve abortion rights, & respect civil liberties. Gone the illusion that the Democratic Party can inspire Americans to embrace peacemaking rather than fear.
---Hereafter we cannot principally write checks to right wrongs. Nor can we content ourselves with feeling superior to Bush by reading leftist magazines. To survive, we must dedicate much leisure instead to implementing practical programs.
---We will now protect one another by replacing illusions with exemplary local actions. This community can prove, alone if necessary, that young people will not be drafted, that the right to abortion prevails, that universal local health coverage works, that we are not controlled by corporate media, corporate retail or corporate finance, & that there are effective alternatives to oil.
---By doing so we plant here the seeds of practical alternatives to fascism, & teach the nation to thrive.

TOWN MEETING: WHAT'S NEXT? 11/13, 2-4pm. "Regardless who wins the Presidential Election many of us know that there is still much work ahead of us." Woman's Community Building. 339-1680 or [email protected]

YOUR LETTERS

"I drive a 1981 Deisel Mercedes, which I have converted to run on vegetable oil. I had been getting used fry oil from a local restaurant & filtering it myself, but the process was incredibly messy, time consuming, & cumbersome, so I located a local source of pre-filtered, ready-to-burn recycled fry oil. Mark at LiguidSolar http://www.liquidsolar.com operates a small pump in his backyard, on top of a fifty gallon drum of used cooking oil that he has collected. On the fateful day when the stars aligned, the Red Sox turned it around (10/20), & I needed more fuel to run my car, I bought a full tank of oil from Mark & PAID FOR IT ENTIRELY IN ITHACA HOURS!!! There I was, driving home, & I realized that we had just completed a magnificent transaction -- I was operating my car on recycled vegetable oil, which no wars have been fought over, as far as I know, & I had paid for it with a useful local currency that has never itself supported any wars, only the labor & lives of friends & neighbors. Now, THAT is what freedom feels like!" --Rebecca Nellenback [email protected]
--------

"I'm wondering if you're ever going to do another newsletter? The latest one I can find is dated 6/11/04. Is this correct? Would love to see it continue. Good luck. Keep up the good fight." --Bob H.
---- "I am saddened to see that the ICN hasn't been written, nor distributed since June. Does it take the summer off (i.e., do you take the summer off?) or is it due to lack of donations? If the former, good for you! If the latter, I wish I could help, but I'm on disability and barely making ends meet. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help with the news, ok?" --Lisa H.
---[REPLY] Editor became especially busy with the Ithaca Health Alliance.
--------

"I am a college student in Spokane Washington. Recently I have begun gathering information on graduate schools for physics, & started looking at Cornell University as a possibility.
---"Since I see it is located in Ithaca, & I recall hearing some things about the place, I wonder if you could help me clear up any misconceptions I may have gotten, or solidify what I have heard.
---"I have heard that Ithaca is a place for the super rich. Like if you don't have a few million you really are not going to be welcome there, & you will not last. I have also heard that Cornell University is a school only for the super rich, & then with just the right connections at that."
---"Anyway, I thought maybe you could offer some clarity on the issue, as it would really help me in evaluating the best school to go to, & where I might fit in." --Jacob Fines
---[REPLY] Ithaca is a place for the struggling working class, the struggling & the secure middle classes. There are many rich & a few super rich. There's a lively alternative & creative culture. Admission is easier for the wealthy, though there are many people there with financial aid. You could get stats from Cornell itself. Being the child or grandchild of a CU grad helps. But if you've got the grades & extracurriculars there's a chance. See "Cornell's Activist History & Future"
--------

"I just wanted to change my old e-mail address on the Ithaca Community News List (we've been spam bombed & don't want to miss your mailing). Great service!" --T. Dunn
--------

"We're beginning to investigate if it would make sense to switch from Verizon to another provider for local telephone service (perhaps coupled with regional and long-distance service as well).
---"This is the kind of issue we all tend to address on our own every few years, but I'd like to learn from your experiences. If your agency has switched from Verizon to another carrier, I'd like to hear if the change: 1) saved money, & 2) caused any decline (or improvement) in service. I'll be happy to share what I learn." --Bob Riter [email protected]
--------

"Our Food Pantry here at Tompkins Community Action will gladly take your plastic grocery bags. We use them all the time & have a need for them all the time. Drop them off at loading dock (701 Spencer Rd) anytime or during business hours (M-F 9am- 4:30pm). [email protected] 273-8816 x143
--------

"I just happened to stumble upon your e-mail archive & must say I am truly impressed! Please add me to your listserve; I'd love to know what's going on." --Marquise
--------

"For the month of November, the Sloan Student Associationwould like to help a local agency organize & collect for a canned food drive. Could anyone recommend an appropriate organization to team up with for this activity? Also, for future reference, if your organization needs any help from a student organization, please e-mail me with suggested activities." --April Denmark [email protected]
--------

"I read about Ithaca Health Alliance in Orion Magazine. Do I understand correctly from your website that membership is open to any & all, or must communities develop their own group? I have a daughter who is presently struggling to maintain coverage for herself, husband & 3 kids as his employer no longer provides coverage ($900/month)." --Joan Sauer
---[REPLY] The Alliance has members in 29 states so far. Payments are made anywhere in the world, to any health provider, for categories currently covered: an example that other communities can follow.
--------

"Thank you for asking for money [for Ithaca Community News]. Too many of us who do independent things for the community don't admit we're as poor as church-mice!" --Julie Jordan
---[REPLY] Thank you, that's so, and thanks to the many who have paid for this edition. Donations may be made to ICN, Box 365, Ithaca, NY 14851
